Vibrations

THE INNER EAR

The Inner Ear is a porcelain instrument that both captures and represents vibration data in the home.

The Inner Ear is a collaboration between design researcher Audrey Desjardins at Studio Tilt (a design research studio), artist Timea Tihanyi at Slip Rabbit Studio (a technoceramics research studio) and many collaborators at the University of Washington.

We designed the Inner Ear in response and in contrast to a growing collection of ‘always on and recording’ smart home devices. We aim to offer more control on how data is collected and to slow down the process of interpreting that data.

Stories

Each household had a unique experience with the Inner Ear and the vibrations in their home. Participants collected a series of short vibration captures, and chose one to be materialized. Our team 3D printed the porcelain data rings to augment the central module.

With their distinct perspectives we were interested to hear about the participants reflections on the Inner Ear.

We aimed to learn about not only the relationships the participants formed with the Inner Ear, but with their home and their interactions with vibrations and memory.

We created a series of short documentary films to capture their experiences.
